Q. What is a cable modem? How does it work?
A. A cable modem connects your computer to the Internet over your Cable TV line. It is an external device having two connections, one to the cable wall outlet and the other to your computer. It is a special device designed especially for high-speed access to the Internet. A cable modem will not interfere with your TV signal. You can use both a TV and a cable modem at the same time.
Q. What cable modem models does Cable ONE support?
A. For a complete list of supported cable modems go to http://support.cableone.net/app/answers/detail/a_id/780/kw/modems .
Q. What are the benefits of having a cable modem?
A. Cable modems bring the Internet to you faster than a dial-up connection. You will not tie up a telephone line while you are on the Internet. Also, the service is "always on" - that means you do not have to dial in to be connected. It is very convenient to stop by your computer and check your e-mail throughout the day. A speedy cable modem means you will have more time to spend enjoying your content, rather than "retrieving it."
Q. What about speed? How fast is a cable modem?
A. Cable ONE has designed its Internet service specifically for Web browsing and e-mail usage. Users will experience connections much faster than what is available through dial-up. A cable modem's downstream connection between our office and your neighborhood travels at speeds barely dreamed of just a few years ago. By design, your typical speed of connection will depend primarily on the package you select. Because modems are not connected at whatever speed the system will bear, speed spikes and slowdowns are drastically reduced helping you to get consistent performance and speed of service. Actual throughput will vary due to several factors including external Internet traffic, Cable ONE system traffic, Internet backbone problems, modem distance from the server, and computer configuration. We want you to know that your speed on our network will be managed for the best possible experience. The choices above are not speed guarantees, but rather best estimates of what you can usually expect given the range of factors that may affect speed. Cable modem service is the best way to have an always-on connection for Internet service at your home.

Q. What makes Cable ONE's Internet service better than DSL, wireless or other types of Internet delivery. Doesn't everyone share the cable?
A. Cable ONE's cable modem service is unlike any other in the country. We have used a special fiber-optic design on our cable network. We have built it to deliver high quality service almost curbside in your neighborhood. Also, Cable ONE engineers added spare fibers for growth. The fiber runs directly back to our office where it connects to the Internet. Many individually dedicated fibers ensure you have a light-speed connection from a point nearby. Web usage is growing rapidly and external Internet traffic and usage varies throughout the day. Cable ONE, however, has a plan for growth, and is dedicated to maintaining a high quality of service. In short, dedicated fiber optics makes the difference.
Q. What about security? Is a cable modem safe?
A. We have taken extra steps to ensure you have a secure connection on Cable ONE's network. Your "packets" are securely routed directly to you through the security methods engineered by CableLabs® and Cable ONE. Does this mean you should not worry? No. Any computer connected to the Internet is at risk. Since a PC with a dedicated connection is "always-on," the risk is greater. This risk is not exclusive to cable. DSL and others have the same risk. At minimum, you should disable file sharing on Windows™. If you have important information on your computer, you should talk with your local computer dealer about a "firewall."
Q. If I have two computers do I need two cable modems?
A. No. By design, you will use only one cable modem in your house. You should consult with a computer dealer on how to configure a small network using a proxy-type router in your house. We will configure only one modem per residence or business.
Q. Do I need to buy cable television to receive Internet service?
A. Subscription to our cable television service is not required.
Q. Do I need special software?
A. No, Cable ONE uses standard mail and Internet settings. We recommend using Microsoft Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.
Q. What is the Cable ONE Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) for cable modem service?
A. Please view the Acceptable Use Policy for cable modem service.
